Deborah Levy hat während ihrer Kindheit in Südafrika nur einen einzigen Schneemann gebaut - gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater, der noch am selben Tag wegen seiner Aktivität für den ANC verhaftet und ins Gefängnis gebracht wurde. Kolossal frihet är en unik svensk samlingsutgåva av Deborah Levys tre självbiografiska titlar Things I don't want to know, Cost of living och Real Estate som utgör hennes litterära och feministiska manifest A living autobiography. Den inledande delen i Kolossal frihet bygger på Deborah Levys svar på George Orwells omtalade essä Why I write där hon redogör för drivkrafterna bakom sitt eget skrivande. Här berättar hon om barndomen i Sydafrika under apartheid-tiden och flytten till England samt om de första stegen på författarbanan. I den andra delen försöker Levy besvara frågan om vad det innebär att vara fri, som konstnär, kvinna, mor eller dotter. Och vilket priset för denna frihet är. Hon använder sitt eget liv i femtioårsåldern som exempel för att besvara dessa frågor. Hennes äktenskap håller på att ta slut samtidigt som döttrarna är på väg ut i livet medan Deborah själv söker en plats att skriva på och finner den i en redskapsbod under ett äppelträd. Den tredje och avslutande delen i Kolossal frihet behandlar den mogna kvinnans förhållande till ägande och ägodelar. Levy gör en inventering av sin egendom, verklig eller inbillad, och för ett resonemang utifrån hemkänslan, eller bristen på den, och de egna tillhörigheterna. Hon låter läsaren fundera över vad intellektuella värden är för något och vilken betydelse de har för privatlivet. I Kolossal frihet utgår Levy från sin personliga historia och associerar fritt kring könskamp och politik, filosofi och litterär teori samt vänskap. Det är 1988 och den unge historikern Saul Adler kliver ut på det berömda övergångsstället vid Abbey Road Studios i London för att hans flickvän Jennifer ska ta en bild av honom. Någon stund senare vaknar Saul till liv när en tysk bilförare står lutad över honom och frågar hur han mår. Saul reser sig upp, borstar av sig, ser att han har några skrubbsår men att han i övrigt är oskadd. Men plötsligt stämmer ingenting, verkligheten har fått slagsida. Jennifer gör genast slut med honom: Fuck off Saul, skriker hon i avsky och Saul ger sig lite stukad iväg på sin planerade forskningresa till DDR. Han blir blixtförälskad i sin östtyska guide, tolken och översättaren Walter, som samtidigt övervakar Sauls förehavanden. Ännu mer komplicerat blir det när Walters syster, Luna kallad, ett inbitet Beatlesfan, förför Saul. När Saul sedan vaknar är det 2016 och vid hans sida sitter Jennifer, fast 28 år äldre. Vad var det som hände egentligen? När korsade Saul Abbey Road? Och hur kommer det sig att London och Berlin, under Sauls berättelse, burit på sådana likheter?
