It is interesting to keep in mind while reading this fascinating account of crime in 19th century New York that the authors of this work, law partners Howe and Hummel, have been shown by history to have been at the heart of the city’s corruption during that period, and that they received fat retainers from a significant proportion of the criminals, brothel-keepers, and abortionists of the city.
