As Hastings makes clear, while the Germans claimed victory, it was the British who ultimately prevailed, for Malta remained a crucial asset that helped lead to the Nazis’ eventual defeat. While the Royal Navy never again attempted an operation on such scale, Hasting argues that without that August convoy the British on Malta would not have survived. In the cruel accountancy of war, the price was worth paying.

De Tweede Wereldoorlog is op vele fronten uitgevochten: op slagvelden en stranden, in het luchtruim en in en op het water van de wereldzeeën. Maar van even vitaal belang was de strijd die ondergronds werd geleverd door inlichtingendiensten, spionnen, dubbelspionnen, codebrekers, infiltranten en partizanen. In dit meesterlijke boek vertelt Max Hastings voor het eerst de geschiedenis van de wereldwijde geheime oorlog tussen alle strijdende partijen en de mensen die in die oorlog hun leven waagden. Hij baseert zich daarbij niet alleen op Amerikaanse, Britse en Duitse bronnen maar, heel bijzonder, ook op Russische en Japanse archieven. Het resultaat is een caleidoscopische blik op een vrijwel onverkend landschap. De geheime oorlog

Het verhaal van de Dambusters is een van de meest opmerkelijke prestaties in de militaire geschiedenis: de dappere jongemannen van het 617de Squadron van de Royal Air Force vlogen met hun zware bommenwerpers schrikbarend laag boven het water recht op de Duitse dammen af in een poging deze te vernietigen. Maar dit verhaal - en de latere oorlogservaring van het 617de Squadron - is nooit volledig verteld. Max Hastings neemt ons mee naar de aanval in mei 1943 en onthult hoe de waarheid van die nacht aanzienlijk verschilt van het populaire verhaal dat de meeste mensen kennen. In 1943 spraken deze dappere mannen tot de verbeelding van de wereld en krikten ze de moraal van het Britse volk op. Hun prestatie maakte de nazi's onrustig en zorgde ervoor dat ze enorme middelen inzetten voor de verdediging van de dammen - waardoor de missie uiteindelijk een succes werd. Een voorbeeld van Churchill's 'militaire theater' op zijn best, wat 617de Squadron deed was een buitengewone en heroïsche prestatie, en een triomf van Britse vindingrijkheid en technologie - een verhaal dat nog vele generaties moet worden verteld.

Operatie Chastise

Operatie Pedestal was een cruciale hulpmissie die uitgroeide tot een epische, bloedige zeeslag en een cruciaal moment in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1942 had de Luftwaffe Malta in een wurggreep. In de maanden april en mei lieten ze in de hele Blitz meer bommen op het eiland vallen dan op Londen. Britse pogingen om voorraden en versterkingen aan te brengen mislukten met zware verliezen, en de mensen op Malta naderden de hongerdood toen de Axis probeerde hun overgave af te dwingen. In zijn kenmerkende briljante stijl geeft Max Hastings een spannend verhaal van deze weinig bekende maar cruciale zeeslag, waarbij hij de intense actie opnieuw vertelt die perfect de geest en kracht van de Royal Navy omvat, zonder twijfel de felste en meest iconische strijdmacht van WW2.

Operatie Pedestal

Tijdens de Koreaanse Oorlog sneuvelden per vierkante meter meer soldaten dan tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Toch noemt men deze oorlog vaak 'de vergeten oorlog' omdat hij in de schaduw stond van WO II en de Vietnamoorlog. De oorlog in Korea spleet het schiereiland in twee delen die tot op de dag van vandaag officieel in oorlog met elkaar verkeren, met grote internationale spanningen tot gevolg. De Koreaanse Oorlog neemt ons mee naar dit bloedige conflict dat de Zuid-Koreaanse onafhankelijkheid na de communistische invasie in 1950 moest herstellen. Aan de hand van persoonlijke interviews met meer dan 200 veteranen - inclusief Chinese - brengt Max Hastings de verhalen van de officieren en soldaten van deze strijd tot leven. Daarmee schetst hij niet alleen een waarachtig beeld van de oorlog, maar laat hij ook zien wat we hadden kunnen leren van deze oorlog, als prelude op de Vietnamoorlog.

Tegelijkertijd heeft hij ook oog voor de aangrijpende gevolgen die de oorlog op het leven van individuen had. Het boek is een bijzonder intiem portret van de wereld in oorlogstijd door zijn gedetailleerde verhalen over de gewone mens - over soldaten, mariniers en vliegeniers; Britse huisvrouwen en Indiase boeren; SS-beulen, Japanse kamikazepiloten en de burgers van Leningrad. Zonder enige twijfel is de Cubacrisis in 1962 het meest beangstigende internationale conflict uit de moderne geschiedenis, toen een nucleaire oorlog dreigde tussen de Verenigde Staten en de Sovjet-Unie. Wekenlang keek de mensheid in de afgrond van de totale vernietiging. Op indrukwekkende en meeslepende wijze beschrijft bestsellerauteur Max Hastings deze bloedstollende periode. Hastings briljante en beeldende geschiedschrijving vertelt het verhaal door de ogen van staatshoofden, Russische officieren, Cubaanse boeren, Amerikaanse piloten en Britse ontwapeningsexperts. De afgrond

Operatie Biting was een van de meest spectaculaire Britse commandoaanvallen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, en waarschijnlijk ook de meest succesvolle. In februari 1942 was de inlichtingendienst van de RAF bezorgd over een onlangs geïdentificeerd radarnetwerk met de codenaam Würzburg. De briljante wetenschapper Dr. R.V. Jones stelde een raid voor om de belangrijkste onderdelen te veroveren. De dichtstbijzijnde radarinstallatie stond echter op een steile klif bij Bruneval in Normandië. Een compagnie van de nieuw gevormde Airborne Forces werd ingezet voor de operatie, die plaatsvond in de nacht van 27 op 28 februari. In een hevige sneeuwstorm landden 120 para's, sommigen venwege het weer op bijna twee mijl van hun doel. Toch zetten ze de aanval in, ontmantelden de Duitse radar en ontsnapten ze, na een hevig gevecht met soldaten van de Wehrmacht, op het nippertje met landingsvaartuigen over de stormachtige zee naar Portsmouth.
