Charlotte M. Yonge's 'Friarswood Post Office' begins by introducing us to the King family, who run a small shop in the village of Friarswood. Ellen King, one of the family's members, is commenting on a dirty and poorly dressed customer who just entered their shop, while her brother Alfred lies in bed, weak and frail, his health deteriorating day by day. The King family had once been prosperous, but tragedy struck when their father, a coachman, died, leaving behind a widow and five children.
