On one level this is a swashbuckling tale of adventure on the high seas; on another a soul-searching psychological examination of guilt and remorse. Jim is a sailor who joins a merchant steamer ship's crew. The ship is abandoned by the crew after it is holed below the waterline. The passengers are rescued by another ship. The crew lose their sailing papers, but only Jim admits to the crime of abandoning ship.
