Swinburne (1837 - 1890) was an English Victorian romantic poet, very much admired in his day. This work is a play in verse he wrote about Mary Queen of Scots and Chastelard (Pierre de Brocoseld de Chastelard). Chastelard was infatuated with Mary and visited her in Scotland after her return from France. His infatuation led to his death.
