This is a historical adventure novel set during the first Boer War. Captain John Niel becomes embroiled in a love triangle between two of Silas Croft's nieces, Bessie and Jess. However, when Niel becomes trapped with Jess during the siege at Pretoria, he realizes he is truly in love with her. Along with the romantic tension, the book features exciting action scenes, including fighting, ostrich hunting, and attempted murder by the hissable villain, Frank Muller. Haggard's authentic depiction of South Africa during this period, where he lived and worked, adds to the book's appeal.
