In the aftermath of the French Revolution, impoverished French noblemen gather in the English capital, hoping to rebuild their lives while keeping an eye on events back home. Among the lucky few who have managed to find their feet in England is Quentin de Morlaix, a peer of France, who has made a career as a master of arms. De Morlaix, meets the fair Mademoiselle de Chesnières, who remarks curiously at the mention of his father's name. Soon thereafter, a solicitor informs him that his brother, who he did not know about, has died. He is now the Marquis of Carabas, and has inherited his brother's vast estate. But several hurdles stand in his way to claim his fortune, not least the dreaded swordsmen brothers, the Chesnières who have an interest in the matter. And also, there is the small matter of the ongoing revolution in France, which might just see him part ways with his head…
