The book opens in an ironmongers shop in Paris where Parson Kelly is endeavouring to purchase a strongbox. He is suddenly and unexpectedly clapped on the back by a long-standing friend, Nick Wogan, with whom he was at school in his native Ireland. This chance meeting and purchase of a strongbox set in train a chain of events that neither could have foreseen.
