In this story, Tolstoy looks at a father and son in two generations. The older Count Turbin is a loveable rogue. He mistreats his servants, chases women, and gambles. Despite this, he is liked and well-treated by those who know him. His son disapproves of his father's behavior and tries to behave in a more reputable way, but he still does not get it right and is perceived as patronizing and a bit of a fool.
