The book is divided in an unusual way into three sections: Tales for the common people; Stories for persons of middle rank; Allegories. They were arranged thus in order to improve the reading material of the common people in particular, by providing them with " a new direction to their taste, and abate their relish for those corrupt and inflammatory publications which the consequences of the French Revolution have been so fatally pouring in upon us." All the stories and allegories are informed by Christian principles.
