The Trees of Pride

The Trees of Pride

Description of book

"The Trees of Pride" is a mystery novel by the acclaimed author G.K. Chesterton. Squire Vane was an elderly schoolboy of English education and Irish extraction. His English education, at one of the great public schools, had preserved his intellect perfectly and permanently at the stage of boyhood. But his Irish extraction subconsciously upset in him the proper solemnity of an old boy, and sometimes gave him back the brighter outlook of a naughty boy. When the aristocrat learns that some trees brought to England by some ancestor before him have become the subject of superstitious belief among his neighbors, he defiantly sets out to disprove the claims. He decides to make it a point to visit them at night. But when he mysteriously vanishes, the townsfolk are convinced that their long held beliefs are true after all. Or are they?
