This novel is set in the early nineteenth century and is told through the vehicle of the characters of the story; Hulin, an old shoemaker, Louise, his adopted daughter, Yegof a strange wandering nomad, and Catherine mother of Gaspard, who is away at the war. The villagers are aware that the war is going badly, but have no news. Fear is beginning to take hold ……..
