"False Evidence" by E. Phillips Oppenheim is the story of a gallant soldier who is dismissed from his regiment and disowned by his father after "evidence" surfaces that he's nothing but a coward. Forced to change his name, he begins a new life and tries to put this smear campaign behind him. However, when his son falls in love with the daughter of the man responsible for instigating his persecution, the past starts coming back to haunt him.
